When they brought me this PC running Vista, and told me it took almost 10 minutes to get to where you could go online, I knew that there was trouble in the registry. And it's a quick check, almost always something that I can fix on my workbench here, or in the field.
I've been fixing computers for almost 20 years - first the early brands that we programmed by hand - and later, systems we built from scratch. Today, it is even more challenging to repair mainly because of the amount of software out there. And because of confusing websites with banners and clickable downloads, it's no wonder people have some sort of break in their Windows registry.
To fix these problems that normally slow down the system, simply because the operating system has to go through each line of the registry to turn on or off a program or setting, what I have been using lately is a registry scanner. I know just from searching on the Internet that there are dozens of these scanners that will look at the registry and try to find problems. But I'll tell you what I use and why, and you can be the judge for yourself.
Early registry scanners and even a few out there today, scan through the registry and report what they find - with an option to try to repair the errors - but without the critical option to save the current registry. Many of us in the technical field found out the hard way during this period that there were some awful registry repair programs out there - a few that crippled the operating system for life. The reason there are bad ones out there is because it is easy to write a simple program and take the customers' money and run.
Thankfully, a handful of smart programmers, and their software companies, brought to the market programs that would scan the registry, show you errors, allow you to back up your current registry, and then take you through the repair process in a step by step method so you're always in control. The registry system I use is called Registry Easy and I have a short video on my website where I show you exactly what it does and why I use it. You can then make the decision if you want to use this on your PC.
So my advice is to not trust a free scanner or something flashy you see online. Watch how this works and then do your due diligence and get it to repair your slow Vista system. The nice thing about Registry Easy is that it will also work on Windows XP.
If it hadn't been for people looking to solve problems with their computers, I'd still be working a desk job at the airlines. But after 11 years there, I came to the point where I was making more money in a month than I made there in a year - simply working the PC's.
